Obituary

Montpelier, VT John William Sykas Sr, 93, formerly of Freedom Drive and most recently of Westview Meadows, died on Saturday, July 6, 2019, with his family by his side. He was born in Barre, VT, the son of William and Anna (Gerber) Sykas. He was a graduate of Montpelier High Schools class of 1943. Upon graduation, John enlisted into the United States Army, where he served as an artillery instructor until his honorable discharge in 1946. On May 3, 1947, he married Marilyn Clerici, his high school sweetheart, at Bethany Church in Montpelier. Together they enjoyed a 72 year union. John began working for the State of Vermont in 1949. He held many jobs and concluded as the Director of Administrative Services for the Environmental Conservation Commission. John retired in 1987 after 38 years of service. He was proud of his service as the President and Chair of the Volunteer board at the Vermont State Employees Credit Union. He was a member of the Bethany Church and enjoyed woodworking, gardening, golf, long scenic drives and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Sykas; his children John W. Sykas Jr (Jack) and his wife Mary Beth of South Burlington, VT, Lynn Sykas Montgomery and her companion, Jerry Senteney of Port Orchard, WA, and Laurel Sykas Chouinard and her husband Michael of Jericho, VT; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his four brothers. The Sykas family would like to thank O.M. Fisher Home and Central Vermont Home, Health and Hospice for their loving care and support.
