John Marshall McGinnis, Jr., M.D.

John McGinnis, known to family and friends as Jack, of Montpelier, Vermont, passed away on September 21, 2026, at the Gary Residence, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on December 9, 1935, in Roanoke, Virginia, to Sarah and John McGinnis, Jack graduated from Yale University in 1956. He married Kristina Aronson on September 7, 1957, followed by entering the University of Vermont College of Medicine where he graduated in 1961.

After completing residency and civil service in Michigan, Jack and Kristina returned to Vermont, where they raised six children.

Jack is survived by his wife of 69 years, Kristina McGinnis; daughter Sarah McGinnis, granddaughter Susannah McPhee, and great-grandson Cameron Johnson; son Frank McGinnis and grandson Devan McGinnis; daughter Martha Ribolini, son-in-law Andrew Ribolini, and granddaughter Morgan Ribolini; son Walter McGinnis and partner Marci Tackett; daughter Carol Manahan, son-in-law Fred Manahan, and grandson William Manahan; sister Mary Boyers and brother Andrew McGinnis. He is preceded in death by his son John McGinnis.

Jack loved sailing, reading, music, theater, and his wife and family. He played the flute and enjoyed singing in the Unitarian Church choir and the Westview Meadows chorus. His six children brought a good measure of joyful chaos into his life. Jack had a terrific sense of humor, particularly enjoying puns and word play. Although Jack and Kristina reached the end of their 71-year road together, their journey was remarkable, loving, and filled with adventures. During his final days, Jack was surrounded by his family, music, conversation, and love.

The family wishes to express much appreciation and gratitude for the staff at the Gary Residence and the residential community in Clara's Garden memory care.

A service for the celebration of Jack's life will be held on Saturday, October 17, at 3:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Montpelier.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Jack's name to the Unitarian Church in Montpelier, Vermont, and to the Ferry Beach Retreat and Conference Center in Saco, Maine.
