Myrtle Beach, S.C./Montpelier, VT John Lawrence "Hank" Dufresne, 82, of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and formerly of Elm Street, Montpelier died at the home of his daughter, Brenda, in Barre on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. John was born in Waterbury, VT, the son of Joseph Victor and Marie Ange (Forest) Dufresne. He attended schools in Waterbury and graduated from Waterbury High School in 1949. He was married to Beverly Briggs on April 25, 1953 in Montpelier, VT. He is survived by his wife and three children; John Dufresne, Jr and his wife Pam of Peachtree City, GA, Brenda Dufresne-Benda and husband Chris of Barre,VT and Brian Dufresne and wife Lynne of Highlands Ranch, CO; eight grandchildren: Carrie Dufresne, Melissa (Lamphere) Blanchard and husband Scott, Emily (Dufresne) Anderson and husband Andrew, Todd Lamphere, Eric Benda, Garett Dufresne, Remy Dufresne, Celine Dufresne; 2 great-grandchildren: Ella and Jackson Blanchard; many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Kathryn (Soper) Wyman of Port Jefferson Station, NY; and sisters-in-law: Cheryl (Johnson) Pinto and her husband Paul of Port Jefferson Station, NY, Deanna Dufresne of Northfield Falls, VT. He was predeceased by his parents and 2 brothers: Joseph Donald and Albert Victor Dufresne. He graduated from Waterbury High School in 1949. He loved to play baseball and was scouted by the St. Louis Cardinals. "Hank" as people affectionately called him, earned his nickname, after Hank Greenberg, when he hit the longest home run ball over the Waitsfield School Building. He joined the National Guard, 43rd Infantry Division while in high school. He was activated and stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict, being discharge in June 1952. He was active in youth sports as a Montpelier Little League Coach and always supported his children's team sports. John worked for many years as a test board operator with New England Telephone Company in Montpelier and later in Burlington. He retired from Verizon in 1989, after 36 1/2 years of employment. Bev and John moved to Myrtle Beach in 2003 to pursue their love for golfing. He transferred his memberships of Montpelier Elks Club and Waterbury American Legion to the Murrells Inlet, SC Elks Club and American Legion #178. He was a member of the Surfside United Methodist Church in Surfside Beach, SC. He played golf daily as a member of the Montpelier Country Club for many years. He played in the Montpelier Cribbage League. He also was a Life member of the Montpelier VFW # 792. Hank was a Past Master of Aurora Lodge # 22 F & AM in Montpelier, Past Patron of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #24 and a past member of the Shrine. Calling hours will be held on Friday evening, September 14, 2012 from 6-8 PM at Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier. A Service of Remembrance and Masonic Memorial service will began at 8:00 PM following calling hours. A private burial with military honors will be held at Green Mount Cemetery.
