John Thomas Colby, 94, formerly of Longmeadow Drive and most recently of Heaton Wood and Woodridge Nursing Home, died on Monday, January 13, 2025.
The son of Roy Agnus and Sarah (Otis) Colby, he was born in Montpelier on April 22, 1930. He attended Berlin and Montpelier Schools and graduated from Johnson Teacher's College in 1951.
John was employed in the Vermont Highway Department, Agency of Transportation for 24 years.
John was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ, the Vermont Society of Engineers, Aurora Lodge No. 22, Free and Accepted Masons, the York Rite and Scottish Rite Masonic Bodies, Mt. Sinae Shrine No. 3, A.A.O.N.M.S., and Rob Morris Chapter No. 24, Order of the Eastern Star.
John was organist for various churches and Masonic bodies, former Stockyard Inn, and performed volunteer work in the Montpelier Area.
Surviving are nieces, Sarah K. Flanders of Bloomington, IN, Carol A. Colby and her husband, Edward S. Allen of Bridgton, ME, grandnephews, Stephen N. Franklin, and Michael T.D. Franklin.
John was predeceased by his brother, Lee Colby (Doris) and his sister, Joyce Colby Flanders (Stephen).
According to his wishes there are no calling hours or services.
