Joan E. Healy, of Terrace Street, died on Friday, September 28, 2019 surrounded by her loving family at Woodridge Nursing Home. She was 82 years old and had recently celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary with Joseph Healy.
Joan was born in Schenectady, NY on November 27, 1935 to George Nailor and Elizabeth (Lathwood) Nailor. She had one sister, Grace Nailor, who died in 1985. Joan would go on to receive a Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology from Green Mountain College in Poultney, VT.
She met Joseph Healy in 1957 and they were married in Albany, NY on August 29th, 1959. They moved to Montpelier in 1965 where they raised their two children. When the children were young Joan stayed home with them and then worked as a teachers aide. As the children got older she decided to become a real estate broker, which she enjoyed doing for many years until eventually settling into being a real estate appraiser until her retirement. Deciding she wanted to keep a little busier than being retired she worked for 10 years at The Kinney Drug Store on the Barre-Montpelier Road.
Joan loved gardening, and was an accomplished pianist and organist. During their life together she and Joe raised 5 collies, which they loved. Joan was an active member of the Montpelier Senior Center, as well as the Emblem Order of the Elks Club in Montpelier. Some may remember Joan as one of the women who volunteered to as a server at Elks Club events.
In addition to her beloved husband, Joe, Joan leaves behind her daughter, Susan Healy-Schnitman and husband, Robert Schnitman and their two daughters Lauren and Katherine Schnitman, all of Colchester, CT, and her son Michael Healy of Montpelier Vermont. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and will be missed by all who knew her.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11am on Friday, October 4th at St. Augustines Church followed by a committal ceremony at Green Mount Cemetery.
