Obituary

Jeannette A. Dunn, 96, died peacefully at her home on December 15, 2008, following a brief illness. She was born in Brockton, MA, on April 22, 1912, the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Ferron) Belanger. She attended the Sacred Heart parochial school and graduated from Brockton High School in 1929. She was an active tennis player, a creative seamstress and had a passion for art. She continued her education with art classes while working daily for an insurance company in Boston. On August 13, 1939, she married Edward J. Dunn of Bridgewater, MA. They resided in Tiverton, RI, until Edward joined the US Army at the beginning of World War II. During the war years, they resided in Petersburg, VA, Bridgewater, MA, and then Brockton, MA, where they remained and raised a family of nine children. Jeannette's talents as a seamstress, from the age of 11 until her death, touched the lives of many through her quilts, dolls, and clothing. Her talent led to later employment, performing sewing and alterations for stores and individuals. She pursued her love of art, creating many scenic paintings. However, her greatest love was for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and she delighted in holding and watching each new baby. A devout Catholic, Jeannette was active in both the Sacred Heart and St. Margaret's parishes in Brockton, MA. After moving to Montpelier, VT, in 2005, she became a communicant of St. Augustine's, attending when her health permitted. She delighted in the monthly visits from either the parish priest or deacon, when she was unable to attend the church in person. She belonged to the Legion of Mary and performed a daily novena and rosary. Jeannette's three years in Vermont were joyful and active, filled with many adventures which she recorded in her journal. She kept a list of "firsts", like riding a gondola to the top of Mt. Mansfield, watching sunsets on Curtis Pond, participating in the Pallettes Project, attending fashion shows and gospel concerts, and visiting the Morse Farm. She regularly enjoyed riding on the back roads in search of waterfalls, turkeys and deer, foliage and panoramic vistas. She loved family gatherings, American Idol and many, many games of Yahtzee with her daughters. Jeannette found more time to discover and savor new authors and their novels. She particularly relished the excitement of the recent elections, reading Barack Obama's books, casting her vote and rejoicing in her candidate's victory. She was predeceased by her husband Edward J. Dunn, her son Michael E. Dunn, her daughter Merrick Mary Dunn, her grandson Stephen P. Churchill, and her brothers Alfred, Esdras and Donat Belanger. Jeannette is survived by her daughters, Theresa Dunn of Montpelier, VT, Connie Dunn of Taunton, MA, Joan Carman and Tim of West Brookfield, VT, Martha Winthrop and Nat of Montpelier, VT, Anna Dunn and Michael Stearns of Munfordville, KY and Margaret Dunn and Raiful Tompkins of Framingham, MA, a son, Robert E. Dunn of Brockton, MA; grandchildren Michael E. Dunn of Syracuse, NY, Kathleen Dunn of New York city, NY, Jodi Carman and Martin Bourassa of Montreal, QC, Stacey (Churchill) Camacho and Willie of Ephrata, PA, Jake Churchill and Katie of Easton, MA, Ted Churchill of Taunton, MA, Elias Winthrop of Plainfield, VT, Emma (Winthrop) Bay-Hansen and Moritz of Montpelier, VT, Daniel Winthrop of Roxbury, VT, and Gabriel Tompkins of Framingham, MA; and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Alice Lacombe of Middleboro, MA, a brother, Arthur J. Belanger of Avon, MA, and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held from 5:00-7:00 pm on Friday, December 19th at the Guare & Sons Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 am on Saturday, December 20th at St. Augustine Church in Montpelier.
