Smith, 81 of East Montpelier passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at the Woodridge Nursing Home with her beloved family by her side.? ?She was born in Hartford, CT on March 15, 1936, the daughter of Herbert and Maxine (Witham) Luce; soon after her family relocated to central Vermont. On October 14, 1955 she married Richard Slayton, they lived in Adamant and raised a family of four girls until Richard's passing in 1987. On June 27,1992 she married Donald Smith and they enjoyed a 24 year union. She felt blessed to have found two great loves in her life. ?Jean worked for many years as a manager at Zayre's Department Store on the Barre-Montpelier Road. She also worked for a time as the manager of the Adamant Co-op and was the part time Postmaster at the local post office. ?Jean was a member of several local organizations including the VFW Post 792 Auxiliary, the American Legion Post 3 Auxiliary and the Montpelier Cribbage League. She enjoyed playing cards, word puzzles and knitting, but caring for her family and friends gave her the greatest joy.? ?Survivors include her husband, Donald "Smitty" Smith of East Montpelier; her children, Diana O'Hara and her husband Michael of Orange City, FL; Donna Dalton and her husband James of Berlin; Barbara and Michael Smith of Middlesex; Tammy Davis and her husband Butch of Berlin; Elaine Duke and her husband Ron of Marshfield; Laurie Marmash and her husband Jack of Pensacola, FL; Lynn West and her fiancé, Joe Whitaker of Barre; Larry Smith and his wife Candi of Calais; siblings, Ruby Elmer of Williamstown, Susan Walbridge of Barre, and Herbert Luce of Williamstown; sister in laws, Betty Griffith and her husband Jessie of Williamstown; Lois Acebo of East Barre; Lucille Deforge of East Barre and John Smith of Venice, FL; 19 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and many, many nieces and nephews.? ?She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Richard and Donald Luce; and more recently by her beloved great grandson, Drew Bernier. ?A family graveside service will be held in the spring at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph.? ?Those wish to express online condolences may do so at www.guareandsons.com.? ?Memorial Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Vermont, 300 Cornerstone Drive, Suite 130, Williston, VT 05495.
