Obituary

Jean Redmond Hart, 85, formerly of Pleasant Street and most recently of Heaton Woods, died with her beloved husband by her side on Monday, July 21, 2014. She was born on March 30, 1929 in Montpelier, the daughter of Thomas and Katherine (Smith) Redmond. She was a class of 1947 graduate of St. Michael's High School. On October 8, 1955, she married Stephen "Toby" Hart at St. Augustine's Church. They have two children, Susan & Stephen. Early in her career she worked as a Telephone operator for the Telephone Company. She worked for several years in the Montpelier City Clerk's office until she ran for and was elected as the Montpelier City Clerk in 1976. She was re-elected to the position 5 times and served in that position until her retirement in 1991. Jean was a life-long member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church. She was previously a longtime member of the Montpelier Emblem Club. Survivors include her husband, Stephen "Toby" Hart of Montpelier; daughter, Susan Viens and her husband Ernest of Barre Town; three grandchildren, Diana Viens and her fiancée Lucas Laperle of Montpelier , Stephen Viens of Northfield , and Krysta Emerson and husband Chris of Barre Town . She has 4 great grandchildren who she enjoyed very much, Emma and Hannah Brown, and Maverick and Sadie Emerson. She also leaves a sister, Katherine Carpenter of Burlington, VT; sisters-in-law, Polly Redmond and Maria Redmond of Montpelier; Joan Hart of Barre; brothers-in-law, Paul Cleary of Mass.; and Van Davidson and wife, Denise of Florida; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Stephen Hart in 1978. She was also predeceased by 8 siblings, Marjorie Zatlukal; Patricia Cleary; Frances Morse; Madeline Downing; Matthew Redmond, Paul Redmond; Frederick Redmond and Mark Redmond. She was a lovely, caring, intelligent woman who was always there for her family and friends. She was a wonderful wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother. She was also a spirited woman who knew how to make people laugh. Calling hours will be held from 6:00-8:00 pm on Sunday, July 27, 2014 at the Guare & Sons Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, July 28th at St. Augustine's Catholic Church. A gathering meal in her honor will be held immediately following the mass in the church basement. Committal prayers will be offered following the gathering at Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier.
