Obituary

J. Lorimer Holm, MD, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 29th, at Chestnut Place in Berlin, Vermont, where he had been living the past few years.

Known by a number of names -- J. Lorimer, J.L., Lorimer, Jamie, Lory, Dr. Holm, Dad, MorFar, Grampie, (and even Jimmy for a brief time in his childhood, according to his mother) -- he was born on August 28, 1935, in Cadillac, Michigan to Benton and Miriam (Lorimer) Holm. He was the eldest of four children.

After an idyllic childhood in the Midwest (with a brief time in Burlington, Vermont) he attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, where he met Sabra Steward, who was attending a nurse's training program there. He graduated from Augustana in three years, moved on to Harvard Medical School in Boston, and returned to Illinois to marry Sabra in the Augustana College chapel, on September 7, 1958. Their life together was full of changes. While Lory was still in medical school, they started a family with the birth of their first daughter. They then moved to Burlington, Vermont for an internship, had their second daughter, and moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he served in the Army for two years as the base physician. After a move to Jericho, Vermont for his residency at UVM Medical Center, the birth of their son completed the family. In 1966 they bought a burned-out brick house in Berlin, Vermont, to renovate and settle into for a lifetime.

Once Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin opened, he worked in the radiology department there, and at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph. He led the CVH Radiology Department through significant technological advancements, such as Ultrasound, CT, Nuclear Medicine, Angiography, Mammography, and Digital Radiology, as well as expansion of the department to serve the growing community. He served as Chair on multiple committees on both hospital staffs, including Peer Review and Quality Assurance. He was the founder and President of Green Mountain Radiology, and for many years he was a member of the Vermont State Medical Society, serving as their Treasurer, a member of the Investment Committee, and a member of the Council of the Society. As one fellow Radiologist, Dr. Jim Chandler, said, "He was a wonderful colleague valued for his intelligence, fierce honesty, and wry humor".

Although his responsibilities as a Radiologist took up much of his time, he still engaged in many hobbies. He collected books, record albums, stamps, coins, cacti, fountain pens, and Swedish glass. He had a passion for birds, growing trees and shrubs that normally don't survive in Vermont, photography, listening to classical music, genealogy, and reading, reading, reading. There were many family vacations to Maine and Nova Scotia, and the long drives always involved multiple stops at book stores along the way. Though he generally exhibited a serious demeanor, he had a fondness for British humor, particularly the books of P.G. Wodehouse and the skits of Monty Python. He loved to tell long jokes at the dinner table that often involved puns (which he would then say are the lowest form of humor). Another great pleasure was a glass of scotch, and lively conversation covering a wide range of topics. A cherished friend, John Russell, shared many long talks with him over the last 60 years, with weekly Tuesday visits the last 20 years.

As their children grew up and left home, Sabe and Lory took different types of vacations, traveling to Europe with good friends Tina & Jerry Kuhn, Maureen & Howard Mindell, Steve & Gisa Green, and sister Gretchen Holm & her husband Jim Atkinson. His love of Ireland prompted a two-week vacation for his entire extended family that we all remember fondly. Many of these vacations included visits to churches and cemeteries to further research the genealogy, stories, and secrets of our family, as well as the families of friends. Genealogy research was a full-time passion for him in the 1980s and 90s.

In 2018, Sabe and Lory sold their home of 52 years, where a lifetime of memories had been made, and moved to Morgan Orchards in Randolph Center, Vermont. In 2022 they moved back to Berlin, to settle in at the newly opened Chestnut Place, where they could be close together, while he received the care he needed in the Memory Care unit. We greatly appreciate the attentive care he received from the staff there, and are thankful to the Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice for their compassionate care the last three months of his life.

Lory Holm is survived by his beloved wife of more than 67 years, Sabra, and his children, their spouses and children: Kristin Holm and Gary Smith (Erik Pendleton, Michael Pendleton, Sara Smiley Smith, Evan Smith, Drew Smith, Regan Smith-Stubbs), Erika Holm (Silas Dowen), Peter Holm and Monica Callan (Adelaide Rooney, Siobhan Rooney), as well as many great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Brian Holm and partner Kathy Nuissl, and Gretchen Holm and husband Jim Atkinson, as well as many nieces and nephews, and their children. He is predeceased by his youngest brother, Peter Holm.

The family will gather at a later date for a private celebration of his life. Lory had many charities he favored over the years, so in lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.
