Obituary

Irene Rossi "Grammy" lived with dignity and grace until August 30, 2008, when she passed on peacefully with family at her bedside. Irene, the widow of Richard Rossi, lived happily with him in Montpelier for 64 years prior to his passing. Most recently she resided at her home with her beloved daughter Betty Lou. In the past, the Rossi family also spent their summers residing on Mallett's Bay at Camp WeGoTook, with extended family and friends. She was born on September 14, 1919 in Barre, the daughter of George Walker and Mary Jane Helpin. Irene was a devoted mother of four daughters, she worked for the Department of Motor Vehicle in Montpelier for 20 years, and the United States Postal Service for 12 years. Following retirement, Irene enjoyed her family, friends, and most of all the accomplishments of her four grandchildren. "Grammy" was a vivacious, independent, and quick-witted woman who cherished her family. She enjoyed sunsets, campfires, Parcheesi, dining out, and picnics at Mallett's Bay with her family. Most of all she loved her husband and soulmate, Richard. She is survived by her four daughters, Betty Lou Rossi of Montpelier, Mary Jane Marchelewicz of South Burlington, Nancy Rossi of Colchester, and Georgia and her husband Ronald Gargano of Connecticut. Irene's four grandchildren, in whom she took great pride, include Paul Rossi Marchelewicz, Joseph Richard Marchelewicz, Kevin David Gargano, and Melissa Irene Gargano. She also leaves behind her sister Elizabeth Hebert of Massachusetts; sister-in-law Neysha Rossi and husband Deke Walker of Berlin; and several nieces and nephews. The Rossi family would like to extend a special thank you to all of her doctors; Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center, and the loving caregivers of Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice who made it possible for Irene to live comfortably in her home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 1, at 11a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Montpelier. Burial to follow at Green Mount Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Sunday, August 31, from 5p.m. to 7p.m. at Guare and Son's Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier. In Lieu of flowers, please send donations in Memory of Irene Mae Walker Rossi to Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center, 98 Hospitality Drive, Barre, VT 05641.
