Irene Richards Reinka, 91, died on December 9, 2013, at Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center. She resided earlier at Heaton Woods and on Barre Street in Montpelier, and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
Born on January 6, 1922, in Wyandotte, Michigan, Irene was the last survivor of seven children of Samuel and Emma Hale Richards. She graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1939 and married her high school sweetheart, William J. Reinka, who died earlier this year. Irene and Bill would have celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary on Christmas Day.
During her life Irene worked as a reference librarian and office manager, among other positions, but devoted herself to her husband, children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Throughout her life Irene set an example of community service. She was active in the altar guilds of several Episcopal churches, as well as in the Episcopal Churchwomen. She taught Sunday School and was active in the PTA. Before moving to Montpelier, Irene was recognized as a community volunteer leader in Libertyville, Illinois, for her many years of service as a hospice volunteer and her devotion to hospitality and fund-raising for the outreach programs of St. Lawrence Episcopal Church.
Irene is survived by two daughters, Rilla Murray and Denise Johnson and a son-in-law, Thomas Wies, all of Montpelier; daughter-in-law Louise Reinka of Eugene, Oregon; and five grandchildren, Erin Strother Murray, Oliver Wies, William J. Reinka III, Lily Wies, and Mora Reinka. She was predeceased by her husband William Joseph Reinka and son William Eric Reinka.
