Irene Therese Gora, born on December 26, 1925 to Anthony and Frances (Fiorello) Vuoto in New York, New York entered into Eternal Life on June 30, 2018 surrounded by her family.
Irene moved from Manhattan to Astoria, Queens, New York with her family in 1928 where she spent many happy days playing with her brother Vincent and cousin Gene. Irene was very attached to her family, often taking trips to Coney Island, Lake Ronkonkoma or Mastic on Long Island. She attended elementary school and Junior High School in Queens and entered Julia Richmond High School in Manhattan in 1939, completing her studies with a College Entrance Diploma with Honors awarded by the New York State Board of Regents in June, 1942.
Irene began to work for American Telephone and Telegraph in Manhattan and stayed with the company until 1949 when she entered Pratt Institute to study her true love, Costume Design. Irene received the Mary Martin Scholarship awarded to a qualified Fashion student after her freshman year. She graduated with honors in 1951.
On September 1, 1951 she married Edward John Gora and moved to Hollis, Queens. Irene worked for Coats and Clark during the early years of her marriage. One of her most interesting jobs was a zipper tester, a job that she represented on the television show "Whats My Line?". Irene and Edward began a family in 1958 and moved to Northport, New York in 1962. Irene continued to work for Coats and Clark on a free-lance basis and wrote many "How To" sewing booklets and a multi-chapter sewing book as she raised her family. In 1968 she returned to the working world designing patterns for Mc Calls Pattern Company in Manhattan.
In August, 1972 Irene moved to Montpelier, Vermont with her family. Always the student, Irene returned to school. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Home Economics at the University of Vermont in May, 1975 and a Master of Science in Administration degree from Saint Michaels College in December, 1981. She worked as a Lecturer, Merchandizing, Consumer Studies and Design at the University of Vermont from 1976 until her retirement in 1987. She remained active through retirement producing countless hand woven, knitted, crochet, and sewing projects.
Irene was a devout Catholic and served her Church, Saint Augustine Parish. She was a Lector and served on the Liturgy Committee. She also welcomed new Catholics into the Church through The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program. Irene was a member of the Catholic Daughters Court of Saint Augustine and served many luncheons and soup kitchens.
She was pre-deceased by her husband Edward Gora, her parents Anthony and Frances Vuoto, her brother Vincent and his wife Rose Vuoto, her Mother and Father-in-law Peter and Sophie Gura, her sister-in-law Mary and her husband Edward Jurka, her sister-in-law Irene and her husband Lawrence Mosner, her sister-in-law Eleanor and her husband John Jarnot, her niece Katherine Resutek, and many other beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She is survived by her children Marie, Peter, Michael and Anahi; her grandchildren Carolyn and Javiar; her cousin Gene and his wife Serina and her cousin Marco and his wife Karen; her nephews Anthony, Vincent, Peter, James, Peter, Paul, John, Mark, James; her nieces Christine, Linda, Andrea, and their families.
Irene gave freely of her talents, her belief in God, and her love for her friends and family. She enjoyed a full and balanced life. She was a wonderful role-model. Her life will be celebrated at 11 am Monday, July 9 at St Augustine Catholic Church. Calling hours are from 6 to 8pm on Sunday, July 8 at Guare and Sons Funeral Home.
