MONTPELIER, VT
Huntington Haag Blair, 54, died at home on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015. He was born Sept. 7, 1960 in Cleveland, Ohio to Gretchen Haag and McClung Rhodes Blair. He was raised in Chagrin Falls, Ohio and Dallas, Texas. He graduated with honors from Brown University in 1983. On October 11, 1986, he married Sarah Boyd. Hunt and Sarah spent the first years of their marriage in Providence, RI, and moved to Vermont in 1992.
Hunt was a passionate worker in the field of health care and health care reform. He began this work at the Vermont Health Care Association, then, oversaw development of the new Copley Manor facility in Morrisville. In his years at Bi-State Primary Care Association, he worked tirelessly to expand Vermont's community health center program and played a key advisory role in shaping Vermont's health care legislation. Under the mantra of turning policy into practice, and because he was fundamentally a "do-er," he continuously sought to implement Vermont's reform initiatives for the benefit of rural and underserved Vermonters. He was recruited to the role of Deputy Commissioner of then Division of Health Reform and State Health Information Technology Coordinator in the Douglas and Shumlin administrations. This work in health IT became his passion, as he recognized its power to advance health reform to the benefit of the public. He worked in Washington, DC, as Principal Advisor to the National Coordinator for Health IT, and continued this work nationally as an independent consultant. In all his work, Hunt was valued not only for his intellect, vision, and dedication, but for his rare personal ability to find common ground among a diverse array of voices, interests, and perspectives.
Hunt's parents introduced him to the natural beauty of the outdoors and he carried on the Blair family love of birds. He took every opportunity to kayak and especially enjoyed observing the daily changes in water and wildlife at Wrightsville Reservoir.
Hunt was dear to his many cousins and in-laws, who appreciated his gentle spirit, humor, and generosity.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Blair, and beloved sons George and Adam, all of Montpelier; his mother, Gretchen Payne of Berlin; and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his father, Mac Blair, and step-mother, Ashley Blair.
