It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hugh M. Hawkins, also known as Sonny, who left this world on February 8, 2025, at the age of 76. Born on April 19, 1948, in the town of Montpelier, Vermont, Hugh lived a vibrant life that spanned nearly eight decades, filled with love, laughter, and adventure.
Sonny was a beloved figure in East Montpelier, where he cherished his home and the community of friends and family he built over the years. With an infectious spirit and a generous heart, Hugh touched the lives of so many, often sharing his wit and wisdom with those around him. He embodied kindness and was known for his unwavering support of friends and neighbors in times of need.
Sonny graduated from Montpelier High School as well as Vermont Tech with an associate degree in Agriculture. Sonny took immense pride in his work which included farming, dairy farming, landscaping, and most recently working as a Driver for Capital City GMC.
Sonny married the love of his life Susan Way at the Episcopal Church in Barre on October 23, 1971. Sonny and Susan raised a beautiful family consisting of five amazing children Samantha, Sara, Shannon, Scott, and Louis.
Sonny had many interests and hobbies, he was a member of the East Montpelier Zoning committee for twenty years, he was a loyal member of the Montpelier Elks Club, VFW, and the Mutuo club in Barre.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents Hugh C. Hawkins and Rachael Badger Hawkins, and brothers Dennis Hawkins and Roy Hawkins, sister Buella and Grandson, "AJ".
Sonny is survived by his loving wife Susan Hawkins of East Montpelier, VT, his loving children, Samantha Hawkins of Rock Hill, SC, Sara Caggiano of Charlotte, NC, Shannon Isaac of Rock Hill, SC, Scott Hawkins of East Montpelier, VT, and Louis Pregent of Randolph, VT. He is also survived by his brother, Gordon Hawkins, and many grandchildren, loved ones, and friends.

Sonny will be laid to rest in the spring at the Fairview Cemetery in East Calais, where he will forever remain a part of the beautiful landscape, he so adored.
