Obituary

Williamstown, VT Hilda L. Webster-Knoerl, age 94, went to join her beloved Mel on October 17, 2018. Hilda was born in St. Albans, Vermont, on December 19, 1923, the daughter of Newton and Florence (Voudrien) Lumbra. Hilda attended schools in St. Albans, graduating from BFA in 1942. After graduation, she worked as a Secretary for the US Government during WWII. In 1947, she married Donald W. Webster, and they initially made their home in Richford, Vermont. They had 3 sons and 1 daughter before moving to Middlesex in the early 1960s. They parted ways after 35 years of marriage but remained friends until Donald passed away in 2005. Hilda began employment in 1963 for the State of Vermont, serving many years with the Board of Nursing before moving on to the Department of Education. She retired on August 1, 1990, after giving over 27 years of dedicated public service to the residents of Vermont. Hilda also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary, the Vermont Retired State Employees Association, the Middlesex Methodist Church and St. Monicas Church. After a difficult childhood, Hilda turned to the church and was baptized as a Catholic when she was 19. Her deep and abiding faith remained constant throughout her life, and shone through in everything she did. She was known and loved by all. A real testament to this fact was when one of her former co-workers introduced Hilda to her recently widowed father, Melvin Knoerl. There followed a whirlwind romance, resulting in a wedding three months later. Hilda and Mel, married in 1997 at the ages of 75, enjoyed almost 20 years of happiness before illness took Mel in 2016. Mel generously shared his three wonderful daughters and their families with Hilda, as she shared her loving family with him. They continued their journey of faith throughout their marriage, often attending multiple Christian church services on a single day, regardless of the denomination. Hilda is survived by her four children, Stephen and his wife Terri, Bryant and his wife Cynthia, Debora (Foley) and her husband Jeff, and James and his wife Carol, as well as nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and a niece. She is also survived by her three step-daughters, Shirley and her husband Dan, Cathy and her husband, Dennis, and Pat and her husband, Dennis, as well as five step grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Mel, her parents, two brothers, Archie and Gerald, and a half-sister, Ada. In accordance with Hildas wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Instead, there will be an Open House to celebrate her life on Sunday, November 4, 2018, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. at the Canadian Club on Route 14 in Barre, Vermont. There will also be a graveside service at the convenience of her family next Spring. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Vermont Chapter of the American Parkinsons Society, or the Vermont American Diabetes Association. Hildas family would like to sincerely thank the staff in the Central Vermont ICU and on 2 North for the caring and compassionate care they provided during her final days.
