Henry G. Jurras, 98, died Saturday, May 10 at Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born on March 30, 1910 to Antonio and Katherine (Anticevic) Jurras, he was a lifelong resident of Montpelier , and was often affectionately known as "The Old Sport" for his personal and professional dedication in covering the local sporting scene.
Henry worked for over 30 years as sportswriter and sports editor for the Montpelier Evening Argus (and later, the Times Argus), and in 1963 he was named Vermont 's "Sportswriter of the Year" by the National Association of Sports Broadcasters and Sports Writers. He covered local high school sports with enthusiasm and passion, and even after retirement could often be seen at the games photographing the action for the newspaper. He also covered horse shows at the England Farm for many years, as well as the collegiate Northern League's Twin City Trojans – a precursor to today's Mountaineers – where Hall of Fame righthander Robin Roberts began his legendary career. In later years, Roberts would often play a round of golf with Henry during visits back to Montpelier , and in a 1949 Vermont Life article, Henry noted that "Roberts will always be a favorite in Vermont because he was big enough to blow a kiss back in this direction after scaling the heights in spectacular fashion." His love of sports also extended to golf, which he played with elegance and skill. He was a longtime member of the Montpelier Elks and Country Club, and could often be seen on the course, playing up to 27 holes in a day well into his 90s. He was also an avid bridge player and long ago was a member of the Apollo Club of Montpelier.
Along with Elma (Holmquist/Shambo), his wife of 52 years, Henry enjoyed annual summer trips to the links and beaches surrounding Kennebunk , Maine for many years, and also enjoyed entertaining their grandchildren at Lake Groton .
Henry is survived by his wife Elma, his son Robert Shambo and wife Linda, his sister Kathryn Barbieri, his grandchildren Kathleen and Robert; his great grandson Jamie, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by two brothers, William and John; two sisters Nada Hanley and Dorothy Robbins; and his son Stephen.
