Helen Loraine Hughes, 81, formerly of Prospect Street, most recently of Berlin Health and Rehab Center, died Monday, March 22, 2010 at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.
She was born in Montpelier on March 30, 1928, the daughter of Fred and Clara (Smith) Edgerley. She attended St. Michael's School and graduated from St. Michael's High School on June 17, 1946
She married Mark E. Hughes on April 25, 1947 at St. Augustine Church in Montpelier.
She worked many years as a telephone operator for New England Telephone company until her retirement. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband, Mark E. Hughes, Sr. of East Barre; and was the loving mother of three children; Joanne Hughes Jewett of Orange, Gary Hughes of Williamstowm, and she was predeceased by her oldest son, Mark E. Hughes, Jr.
She is also survived by three grandchildren; Chris, Lewie, and Megan; two great grandchildren, Myha and Eva; a son-in-law Jay Jewett; a daughter-in-law, Judy Hughes; a cousin Danalda Chenette and her husband Bernie. She was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Adams and two brothers, Harold Edgerley and Robert Edgerley.
Calling hours will be held from 6:00-8:00 pm on Friday, March 26th, at the Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier, VT. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 1:00 pm, Saturday, March 27th at St. Augustine Church in Montpelier. A reception will follow the mass in the parish hall. Burial will be held at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph in the spring.
