Obituary

Montpelier - Hayden Sullivan Durkee passed from this world in the early evening hours of Sunday, October 20, on the eve of his 33rd birthday.

Self-educated, Hayden immersed himself in the study of philosophy, history, literature, the arts and world religions.

Hayden was both a serious scholar and an avid fan of science fiction. He was deeply interested in the thin membrane between the world of experience and the world of living imagination.

Hayden had a strong, independent entrepreneurial spirit. Under the mentorship of his mother, he started and managed, at the age of 16, the Delish Candy shop on State St. In Montpelier which continues to sweeten our community to this day! Since then he owned and operated Downtown T's, also in Montpelier.

Most recently he was self-employed as a property manager as well as a production assistant at Cosmic Cotton wholesale.

Hayden had a tremendous passion for music from an early age. In middle and high school, he would improv rap for friends and strangers, and he always had good music in his world, from rock to rap, and reggae to jazz.

Hayden adored his constant companions; Casper, his cat, and his sweet dog, Daisy.

Hayden loved his family dearly and he was a committed and true friend. He leaves behind his beloved mother, Kelly Sullivan and her husband Martin Kemple of Worcester, Vermont. He is also survived by his devoted father, author Lee Durkee of Oxford, Mississippi, as well as Gary McMillan of Plainfield, loyal family member. His dear siblings include Jade McMillan of Worcester, Chuong Sullivan-Kemple of Burlington, and Rachel Kemple of Montpelier.

He also left behind his Grammy, Lois Andreson of Rochedale, Massachusetts, whom he adored, and her partner Rich Frost, as well as numerous cousins, aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by both of his grandfathers and his paternal grandmother.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at 12:00 p.m. this Saturday, October 26, at the Pavilion beside the Montpelier Swimming Pool.
