Montpelier, VT
H. Glenn Nicholson of Montpelier, VT died peacefully surrounded by family members at the VNA Respite House in Colchester, VT on June 7th, 2017.
Glenn was born September 1, 1927 in Lower Kingsclear, NB Canada to Annie (Pickard) and Harold Roy Nicholson. He spent the first 18 years of his life attending school and working in New Brunswick Canada.
Glenn married his high school sweetheart, Laura 'Mae' Savage on October 22, 1945. After their marriage they emigrated to Vermont where Glenn found full time employment and together they began growing their family of five children. Family and social gatherings with family and friends were a great pleasure for both Mae and Glenn.
Glenn's first job in Vermont was on a family member's farm in Danby after which he moved his family to Riverton to work for his uncle hauling sand and gravel. It wasn't long before the family moved to Montpelier and Glenn began work on the Montpelier Street Department and then began a lifetime career as a City of Montpelier fireman. Glenn achieved the rank of Assistant Chief before retiring after 38 years in the deparment; 17 years of which also involved driving the ambulance. Glenn dedicated many hours to improving the firefighting system in the State of Vermont. He was a very active member of the Vermont State Firefighters Association and the Vermont Fire Chiefs Association. He often lobbied the Vermont legislature to help get bills passed that improved the working conditions and welfare of fellow firefighters and their families. Glenn so loved firefighting that he remained active on the City of Montpelier call force even after retiring his full time position.
Glenn worked at many other part time jobs in his lifetime including taxi driver, deputy sheriff and for many years ran his own small business - Nicholson's Driving School.
When not working Glenn found time to volunteer and give back to the community. For many years he taught first aid on behalf of the American Red Cross. He also belonged to the Elk's Club and the Masonic Lodge in Montpelier. At the Lodge he indulged in his love of cooking and served many a meal. His passion for gardening resulted in a prolific garden and excess produce was shared with neighbors and the Senior Center.
Glenn was predeceased by his mother and father, his wife of 66 1/2 years, Laura 'Mae' Nicholson, his son, Douglas Nicholson, his grandson, Gavin Whitney, his sisters, Marion Davies, Joyce Ernat and Donna Cooper and his brother Roy Nicholson.
Glenn is survived by his brother Paul Nicholson and wife Evelyna of Fredericton, NB Canada, his children, Patricia Whitney and partner Basil Ross of Derby, Frederick Nicholson and wife Maryanne of Rutland Town, Marjorie Magoon of Barre Town and Steven Nicholson of Shrewsbury, 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
