George T. Matkowski, 85, of Elm Street, Montpelier, died Saturday from a short illness.
He was born in Stowe on July 7, 1929 to Theodore and Emelia (Krawiecki) Matkowski and he attended Stowe High School. He married his wife Jewel (Wagstaff) Matkowski, from New Britain, CT at the Christ Episcopal Church in Montpelier on May 1, 1948.
George worked for more than 30 years for Ward Baking Company (Tip Top) as a bread salesman. Later, he worked for the Montpelier School system as a custodian at Montpelier High and as the Head of Buildings, Maintenance, and Grounds for East Montpelier School. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church since 1948.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Jewel in 2007. He is survived by his son Leslie and daughter-in-law Evelyn of Montpelier, his daughter Sharon and son-in-law Douglas Turner of Waitsfield, and his sister Helen Podesla of Connecticut; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. George touched and enriched many lives and will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church on Dec. 4th at 1:00pm. There will be a reception after the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Christ Church Discretionary Fund, c/o Rev. Paul Habersang, 64 Street Street, Montpelier, VT 05602
