Genevieve H. Sykas, 85, formerly of North Street and more recently of the Gary Home in Montpelier, died Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at the Woodridge Nursing Home.
She was born on May 14, 1925 in New Rochelle, NY, the daughter of Herman and Elsie (Ek) Hageman. She graduated high school in 1942 from Springfield Technical High School in Springfield, MA. She attended the American International College and graduated with a B.A. in 1946.
On June 1, 1947, she married James W. Sykas, in Springfield, MA. She and her husband owned and operated the Coffee Corner restaurant in Montpelier for 26 years until they retired in 1983.
She is survived by her children, Susan S. Lang and her husband Lynn of Essex Junction, Mark J. Sykas and his wife Sharon of Stratham, NH; daughter-in-law Lady Astacio of Hollywood, FL; grandchildren, Jason Lang and his wife Kathryn Crampton of Ponte Vedra, FL, Abigail Sykas of Dover, NH, Benjamin Sykas of Willimantic, CT and Alexander Sykas of White River; three great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sydney and Samuel Crampton Lang of Ponte Vedra, FL; a sister, Elsie LaPointe; and a sister-in-law, Marion Hageman; and many nieces and nephews.
Genevieve is also survived by her husband's family, John Sykas and his wife, Marilyn of Montpelier; Paul Sykas and his wife, Patricia of Groton VT; and Peter Sykas and his wife, Barbara of Anacortes, WA; and many nieces and nephews.
Genevieve was predeceased by her husband on April 4, 1998 and a son, Eric J. Sykas on December 28, 2008.
In keeping with Genevieve's request, there are no calling hours and a private burial
will be held at the convenience of the family.
