Obituary

Geneva Rose Barney, 92, of Heaton Woods, Montpelier died Friday, May 28, 2010 at her home. She was born on July 26, 1917 in Orleans, VT the daughter of Glenn A. Barney & Grace Edith (Croft) Barney. Geneva attended school in Orleans and graduated from Orleans High School. She moved to Montpelier and worked at the Brown Derby Restaurant as waitress until she began her career at New England Telephone Company. She retired after 40 years of service as a supervisor and as Chief Operator in Barre and Montpelier Offices. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and Telephone Pioneers of America. Geneva was pre-deceased by her brothers Vernal, Cecil, Earl and Ralph and her long time friend, Howard E. Sweeney who died Jan 27, 1995. She is survived by a few cousins and many friends. She will be missed profoundly by her friends and staff at Heaton Woods and by her former neighbors on Liberty Street. Geneva loved Montpelier. She was an avid reader and a great storyteller. While living at Heaton Woods Geneva participated in Janet Hewitt's writing group and discovered that putting pen to paper was a wonderful way to share her stories with a greater audience. She also loved going out to lunch with friends and was a firm believer that a Margarita enhanced almost anything on the menu. She had a wicked and wonderful sense of humor and was a kind and generous soul. Nothing pleased her more than hosting a holiday cocktail party for all her friends at Heaton Woods. She enjoyed living there. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 11:00 am, Wednesday, June 2nd at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 10:00 until 10:30 at Guare & Sons Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery in Orleans, VT. Memorial contributions may be made to Heaton Woods Activity Fund, 10 Heaton Street, Montpelier. Those wishing to send online condolences may do so at www.guareandsons.com and go to Geneva's obituary.
