Montpelier, Vt.
Frederick Thayer Jordan, a devoted family man, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Friday, September 28, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. He was 87. Born on April 23, 1931, in Burlington, Fred was son of the late University of Vermont Professor Hovey Jordan and the late Ursula Kimball Jordan.
He was the loving husband of Nancy Chase Jordan, whom he met in 1956 and took downhill skiing in Stowe for their first date. That was the beginning of their beautiful life together. Fred had met the love of his life after returning to Vermont following four years of service in the US Navy during the Korean War, and enrolling at the University of Vermont. Fred and Nancy married in 1957 and spent 61 happy years together.
In their early years, they first lived in Burlington, with a brief stint in Portland, Me., before moving to Montpelier in 1965, where Fred worked as a highway engineer for the State of Vermont. Fred retired after a 33-year career of "straightening out the roads of Vermont". They raised three children, David Jordan of Francis, Utah; Cheryl Terrill of Plymouth, Mass., and Susanne Megrath of East Montpelier.
Fred will be dearly missed by his wife and children; son-in laws Robert Terrill and Steven Megrath; four grandchildren, Ashley Terrill of Plymouth, Mass., Devin Terrill of Santa Barbara, Calif., Michael Megrath of Matthews, N.C, Jordan Megrath of East Montpelier; and great-grandson Connor Terrill; sisters, Ursula (Sue) Plummer of West Chester, Penn.; and Louise Harper of Holyoke, Mass.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his sister Ruth Evans.
Fred always had a tremendous love and appreciation for the outdoors. Whether it was skiing, canoeing, kayaking, camping, snowshoeing, hiking the Long Trail end-to-end 4 1/2 times, biking, or simply out for a walk, Fred truly loved every aspect of the outdoors. It was reflected in the life he led and shared with his family and friends. From family vacations to leading group outings, volunteering for the Green Mountain Club working on the trails, it all encompassed his true passion: nature. He also had a competitive side, and keeping up with him on a hike, bike ride, or ski slope, was often a challenge.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, October 13, at 3:00 p.m. at the Green Mountain Club Visitor Center in Waterbury Center. The family encourages his friends to wear their hiking boots, bring a picture and memory of Fred to share. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Green Mountain Club in Fred Jordans name for trails and shelter maintenance on the Long Trail.
