Frank Alfred Hickory, age 79, a resident of Montpelier, our beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away at the Central VT Medical Center in Berlin, on Monday, February 16, 2015 just two days shy of his 80th birthday.
Frank died surrounded by his loving children. Frank was a loving husband and fantastic father. Frank had a reputation for his quick witted good humor, charming personality and a smile that would melt your heart. He was affectionately known as "Popeye" to his grandchildren.
Frank was born in Waterbury Center, February 18, 1935, the son of the late Alfred and Ivis (Johnson) Hickory.
Frank was married Sandra Jean Belanger. They raised their family in Montpelier. Sandra died April 9, 1993.
Frank was a 1953 graduate of Waterbury High School. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was proud to serve. Upon his return to the states he was an employee of the National Life Insurance Co. in Montpelier and continued to serve with the Army Reserve, Always active and vital in the community, Frank was past Commander and life member of Brown-Johnson VFW Post 792 in Montpelier. He was also a life member of the American Legion Post #3 in Montpelier and a life member of the Elks Club 924.. During his later years he volunteered his time at Woodridge Rehabilitation in Berlin.
Frank coached & umpired little league refereed basketball games and took on numerous jobs to help support his family. He also helped to care for his elderly parents.
In his leisure time Frank, who was an avid cross word puzzler, bowler, hunter and fisherman, enjoyed playing cards, golfing and traveling.
Frank is survived by his children Debby Hickory (Frank Leslie), of Barre, Mark Hickory (Cathy Hickory) of Essex, Michael Hickory ¬(Shannon Hanson), of Key Largo, Lisa Hickory (Don Smeall) of Ottawa, Ontario & Karen Brouillette (John Neddo) of Websterville; nine grandchildren, Christopher Magoon, Ben & Morgan Hickory, Tyler & Samantha Hickory, Collin & Casey Kennedy and Brianna & Dustin Brouillette; as well as nieces, nephews and other extended family. Frank is also survived by a wide circle of best friends. Frank was predeceased by wife, Sandra (Belanger), his parents Alfred & Ivis (Johnson) and his sister Ruthmary (Hickory) Biebel.
Frank's family extends thanks for the wonderful care and companionship he received from the dedicated staff at Lincoln House in Barre. The family also extends thanks to Frank's many friends and family members for their visits and support. He appreciated the support and kindness more than you can know, and in his memory, the family hopes that his friends will provide that loving support to those who may otherwise spend days alone.
Calling hours will on Friday, February 20, 2015 from 4:00-5:00 PM at Guare & Sons/Barber & Lanier Funeral Home, 30 School St., Montpelier. A memorial service will follow at 5:00 PM at the Funeral Home. A reception will be held immediately following at the VFW Post #792 in Montpelier.
