Frances McGibney Marcoux, 99, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at Woodridge Nursing Home after a period of failing health. She was born Frances Marion McDowell on September 16, 1910 in Evansville, VT the daughter of Clarence C. And Gertrude (Gallup) McDowell. Frances received her early education in Brownington, VT and moved with her family to Montpelier in 1924. She graduated from Montpelier High School in 1928 and from the Mary Fletcher School of Nursing in Burlington in 1932. She was a registered nurse and was employed for a period of time at the former Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington and also had done private duty nursing. She married Leo F. McGibney in Montpelier in 1935 and the couple resided in Montpelier where Mrs. McGibney devoted the following years to raising her family. Mr. McGibney died April 3, 1957. In 1960 Mrs. McGibney married Hector T. Marcoux, who was a Chittenden County Senator. The couple reside for a time in South Burlington and later made their home in Underhill. After Mr. Marcoux's retirement from the Legislature, the couple moved to Shaftsbury where Mr. Marcoux was employed as manager of the Harry M Stevens food concession at the former Green Mountain Race Track in Pownal. Mr. Marcoux died March 31, 1985 in Shaftsbury and Mrs. Marcoux moved to South Burlington in 1986 to be near her family. She moved to Montpelier in 2004 and resided at the Gary Home until becoming a resident of Woodridge in 2008. Surviving are her daughter, Beverly M. Gaboriault of Montpelier; three sons, Peter C. McGibney and his wife, Phyllis of Woodbury, VT and North Port, FL; Thomas S. McGibney and his wife, Lucille of Montpelier; and Steven J. McGibney and his wife, YuCha of Dumfries, VA; 10 grandchildren, Claire Gaboriault, Montpelier; Mathew McGibney and Marcia Corey of South Burlington; Margo Johnson of Williston; Scott McGibney of Brooklyn, NY; Carrie Ramsey of Stafford Springs, CT; Shannon Howlett of Bennington; Kendall McGibney of Fairview, PA; Daniel McGibney of Arlington, VA and Elizabeth Drew of Southbridge, VA; 12 great grandchildren, 2 step-daughters, Geneva Blakey of Beverly Hills, FL; and Gabrielle Davis of Barefoot Bay, FL; 2 step-sons, Leonard Marcoux of Chrystal River FL; and Francis Marcoux of Pasadena TX, brother, Reginald McDowell and his wife, Irene of Sun City AZ; 2 nieces and 4 nephews. Frances was pre-deceased by her oldest son, Frederick R. McGibney who died March 21, 2004, a grandson, John McGibney in 1994, and two brothers, Rupert McDowell and Ross McDowell and a sister, Theda Frost. A Funeral Service will be conducted at Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier on Friday, October 23rd, at 11:00 a.m. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 10:00 am until the hour of the service.
