East Montpelier, VT Florence (Flo) Jean Young, 89, passed away on January 27 at her home in East Montpelier Center. Flo was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Frederick and Wilhelmina (Klimp) Huizenga. After graduating from Western Michigan University, she taught high school and performed in Summer Theater for several years in Michigan. She moved to New Jersey before settling in East Montpelier Center in Vermont where she has lived for more than 40 years. As a Vermonter, Flo worked in the Civil Defense Office and served as the Personnel Officer for the Department of Public Safety. As a long-time member of the Central Vermont Theater Guild, Flo was memorable in many of their productions, until recently she was a docent and educational tour guide for the state house, served as the public member for Vermont Medical Board, was an active member of the League of Women Voters, volunteered in the CVMC gift shop, and was Treasurer of U32 School District. She was an engaging teller of stories, drawing on her experiences with theater, politics, politicians and the legislative process. Because of Flo's vision, a naturalization ceremony is held in the Vermont State House each year. She was preceded in death by her brothers Richard, Charles, and Robert. She is survived by several nephews and nieces - Dwight Huizenga, Gene Huizenga, Willa Furman, Frank Huizenga, Caren Huizenga, Douglas Huizenga, Ritz Huizenga – as well as a number of great nieces and nephews, and her dear friends Kathi Smith and Kathie Retchless. Family and friends are grateful to TLC and Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice for the care and comfort they provided for Flo in her home. Calling hours will be held from 6:00-8:00 pm on Friday, January 30, 2015 at the Guare & Sons/ Barber & Lanier Funeral Home, 30 School Street Montpelier, VT. A committal will take place at a later date in Kalamazoo, MI.
