Montpelier, VT Esta Ruth Garbati, 89, formerly of Allen Road, South Burlington and Heaton Woods, Montpelier, died December 7, 2013 at Woodridge Nursing Home. She was born on January 22, 1924 in South Rygate, VT the daughter of Amerigo and Maria (Pacini) Garbati. Esta was a graduate of Woodsville High School in 1942. She lived in Miami, Florida for several years where she worked for a charter airline. In this role she traveled all over the world. She returned to Vermont where she was employed as a Supervisor for the State of Vermont, Department of Motor Vehicles. She retired in 1988. In earlier years Esta was an active member of St. Augustine's Parish in Montpelier where she volunteered as a bookkeeper and served on the Finance Committee. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Augustine #976, where she served in various leadership positions. She was the founder of the St. Augustine's Soup Kitchen and helped with its operation for many years. She also held positions on the CDA State level including State Regent from 1992-1994. Esta has been a Sister of Mercy Associate since 1991. Esta is survived by two nieces, Selma (Pat) Hickey, Las Vegas, Nevada; and Sylvia McElrath, Sweet Home, Oregon; nephew, Joey Barquin, Sarasota, Florida; great nephews and niece, Shawn Edwards of Sacramento, California; and Matthew Hickey and Crystal Edwards of Las Vegas, Nevada; and devoted friend, Rita Poulin of Barre and Zephyrhills, Florida. Esta was predeceased by her siblings, Guido; Secondo; Anselmo, Aurora Barquin; Evelina Sagris; and a nephew Don and great-nephew, Brian. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Dec. 12th from 9:30 – 10:30 am at Guare & Sons Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Thursday at 11:00 am at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will be held in the spring in the family lot at Pinehurst Cemetery, South Rygate VT. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Augustine's Soup Kitchen, 16 Barre Street, Montpelier, VT 05602.
