Obituary

Edward Matthias Cannon, 83, of Upland Ave, died June 12, 2010 at home after spending the day visiting with his family. He was born on December 19, 1926 in Northfield, VT, the son of John Alfred and Myrtle Ellen (Church) Cannon and attended schools in Northfield. On November 6, 1954, he married Florence Messier in Northfield, VT. After the marriage ended, he married Mary (DeForge) Gilman on April 10, 1976 in Northfield, VT. Mary predeceased him on November 28, 2009. He worked for Rock of Ages for 19 years in various positions, then drove delivery truck. After that he worked in the construction as a Explosive Specialist and helping to build many parts of the State of Vermont Interstate system to include Route 62 in Barre, Vermont. He retired from Bombardier as a crane operator in 1995. He was a life time member of Post 709 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Montpelier, VT. On February 27, 1945 he enlisted into the United States Army during World War II serving in the Pacific Theater, then transitioned into the Army Air Force on March 6, 1946. He was honorably discharged on December 5, 1946. Survivors include his daughter, Mary Hannigan of Barre and step daughter, Anne Wilson of New Hampshire; sons, Joseph Cannon of Barre and James Cannon of Northfield Falls; steps sons, Steven Gilman of Berlin; Stanley Gilman of Florida; Michael Gilman of NH; Gary Gilman of Barre; and Brian Gilman of Barre; sister, Bertha Muennink of Northfield; 21 grand children, many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two daughters, Helen Cannon and Susan Cannon; two brothers, Alan Cannon and Robert Cannon; three grandchildren, Randy Cannon, Natoshia Cannon, and Steven Gilman Jr. Calling hours will be held at Guare & Sons Funeral Home on Thursday, June 17, 2010 from 6:00-8:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held 11:00 am on Friday, June 18, 2010 at St. Monica's Catholic Church. Committal prayers and military honors will be offered at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery following the mass.
