Middlesex: Edith Joslin, 84, died peacefully Friday morning March 11 in her home of 40 years. Edith was the daughter of Gladys (Palmer) Gaylord and Walter Gaylord of Waitsfield. She was born July17, 1926 and was one of four children. Her twin sister, Ethel Grandfield of Montpelier, survives her. Her two older brothers, Palmer and Hadley Gaylord are deceased.
Edith attended the public school in Waitsfield and graduated, academically, with the
highest rank in her high school class of l944. She was a member of the orchestra, the glee club, and served as class treasurer. She played basketball and enjoyed skiing. After high school Edith attended and graduated from Burlington Business College after which she was employed as a secretary at the Burlington Federal Savings and Loan.
On October 16, l948 Edith married Eugene Joslin, also of Waitsfield. The couple knew each other since their youth. Together they settled first in Burlington on Apple Tree Point, and in l953 purchased a 350 acre dairy farm, Edgemont Jersey Farm, on Upper Terrace Street in Montpelier. They owned and operated the farm for 18 years at which point the couple moved to Middlesex.
Edith has three children. Lt. Col. Randall Joslin (ret AF) of Colorado Springs, CO, (temporarily living in Stuttgart, Germany), Judith Grich of the Raleigh, North Carolina area, and Sandra Joslin of Hanover, New Hampshire.
Edith was a devoted wife and mother. She worked tirelessly managing the business and financial records of the farm. She also took great pride in managing her home and vegetable garden, from which she preserved most of the family's food. She was active in leadership roles for the boy scouts, 4-H, girl scouts and Sunday School of the Bethany Church in Montpelier. During the years at the farm she also worked temporarily for the State of Vermont Teachers' Retirement Association, and in the subscription department of the Vermont Life Magazine. In the 1970's she became a strong advocate for education reform and in her later years she also devoted many hours in the Barre Benefit shop volunteering on behalf of the Central Vermont Hospital.
Edith was multi-talented and enjoyed all of the home arts, particularly needle arts. She also loved antiques and making lovely flower arrangements from wild flowers and those she grew in her own gardens. Edith was inspired by her natural surroundings and many things she designed reflected this appreciation which she nurtured from her childhood. Edith took special delight watching and feeding songbirds in the warmer months and identifying wild flowers and plants in the spring.
From approximately 1981 2005 the couple wintered in a second home they owned in
Bradentron, Florida. Together they enjoyed their time at the beach, time with family, friends and neighbors, and finding simple treasures to make their home comfortable.
Surviving Edith is her husband of 62 years, Eugene Joslin, 86, their three children, 5 grandchildren, one great grandson and many nephews and nieces.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, March 15th, 5-7pm at the Barber & Lanier Funeral Home, 139 Main Street in Montpelier. A burial will follow in later spring at the Waitsfield Commons Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice at 600 Granger Road Barre, Vermont 05401.
