Obituary

Dorothy Elizabeth (Farnham) Freeman, passed away on August 23, 2024, following a short illness, at the Central Vermont Medical Center at the age of 95. Her children and other family members were at her side. Dorothy (Dot) was one of six children born to Arthur & Violet (Morrill) Farnham of Moretown, where she lived most of her childhood. She grew up surrounded by a large family as her father was one of 18 children and her mother had 5 siblings.

It was an idyllic childhood spent with the extended Farnham family, playing cards and gathering with their musical instruments on a Saturday evening. Her school was completed at Montpelier where she boarded with a family during the week, and went home on weekends.

Dot worked at M.H. Fishman's Store in Montpelier at the counter service. She married Wilbur Freeman on June 25, 1949 and had 64 years together in Montpelier where they raised their four children. She had great love for her family and raised the children as a stay-at-home mom until the children were teens. Later, she worked part time for The Gary Home on Main Street and for Fashion Bug at the Berlin Mall before retirement.

Dorothy had many interests that included sewing, painting, baking, and camping. She made many beautiful quilts, often designing her own patterns. She took up oil painting at the age of 60 and continued painting well into her early 90's. Dot also had a large collection of recipes for baking and she loved sharing all her baked goods with neighbors, friends and family. She fostered that artistic passion by sharing those interests with her children and grandchildren.

Dot loved family immensely, but her greatest love was Jesus. Her life was guided by her strong faith. She was a dedicated warrior for Christ and prayed for family and anyone she knew to come to Jesus. She was a member of the Lighthouse Christian Church in Montpelier and routinely gathered there on Sundays and Tuesdays with the Women's Group praying and celebrating all those in need.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wilbur. She is survived by her son, Robert and his wife Teresa; her three daughters, Susan Boyd and her husband Greg; Carol Edwards (Terry predeceased); Jayne Hall and her husband Richard. Dot also leaves her eight grandchildren, Shara (Jamie) Buffington, Nathan (Mandy) Donahue; Joshua Hall; Jeremy (Erin) Hall; Sarah Hall; Christopher (Mary Katherine) Grandfield; Adam (Faith) Freeman; Kelli (Ryan) Zyla; and 16 great grandchildren; Faith & Madyson Hall; Jack, Ann & Chase Buffington; Payton & Grace Donahue; Madison, Ethan & Garrett Hall; Kayce & Lucas Lagerstedt; Mason & Cameron Freeman; and John & Corri Zyla. Dot is also survived by two brothers, Robert (Luella) Farnham of Rutland, VT and Geary (Laurie) Farnham of Morganton, N.C. She was predeceased by her son-in-law Terry Edwards and siblings, Daniel Farnham, Ruth Boyce, and Lillian Circello.

A Christian service will be held on September 4th at 11:00 a.m. at the Lighthouse Christian Church on School Street in Montpelier. Interment will be at the Vermont Veterans Cemetery in Randolph Center at a later date. Donations can be made in her memory to The Adult & Teen Challenge of Vermont, 129 Collins Hill Road, Johnson, VT.
