Donald C. Rich, 92, died peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at the Central Vermont Medical Center. He lived with his wife on Brookfield Road, Berlin.
Don was born in Montpelier on November 8, 1925, the son of Ray and Effie (McFarlane) Rich. He attended Montpelier Public Schools before enlisting in the United State Army Air Corp. He served his country by training to be a pilot but was discharged when the war ended.
On June 30, 1946, he married Lorraine Desilets at St. Augustine Catholic Church. They celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary last year.
Don began working as a field technician for Interstate Equipment and later as a sales person.
In 1969 he started J & R Equipment Company, a John Deere heavy equipment business. He later worked for McCullough Crushing and retired from there in the late 1980s.
In Dons early years he completely renovated an old farm on Brookfield Road in Berlin. He worked as pit mechanic for State Equipments stock cars at Thunder Road. Don loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He appreciated his trips to Alaska to see his son and family. One of his hobbies was building and flying model airplanes. He also enjoyed bowling. One of his favorite pastimes was watching and feeding the ducks and birds. Summer and fall days he and Mickey sat on their breezeway watching people walk by and looked forward to visiting with those who stopped to say hello.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine "Mickey" Rich of Berlin; son, Steven Rich and his wife Susan of Berlin and their daughter Katie John and her husband Patrick of East Montpelier; son, Gary Rich and his wife Judy of Anchorage, AK and their daughter Aimee Rich of Monroe, Washington; daughter, Pam Rich of Berlin and her children Tucker Purchase and his wife Melissa of East Montpelier and Shelby Quinn and her husband John of Northfield; son, Kim Rich and his wife Pat of Nelson, NH and their children Baily Rich of North Carolina and Tyler Rich of Nelson, NH; daughter, Bonnie Hall and her husband Richard of East Montpelier and their children Clara Ayer and husband Dana of Berlin, Ricky Hall and wife Elizabeth of East Montpelier and Isabel Hall of East Montpelier; also great grandchildren; Tristen Bergman, Isaac John, Kennedy and Calvin Quinn, Ella and Sophie Purchase, and Carson Ayer.
He was predeceased by his sister, Dora Walsh of Chicopee, Massachusetts.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service and Celebration of Life will be held in the spring.
