Obituary

Donald Milan Cody, 82, died peacefully Monday, May 4, 2015, at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida surrounded by his loving family. Don (Big D) was born on January 5, 1933 in Montpelier to Richard and Lilli (Handy) Cody. He graduated from St. Michael's High School in 1950. He received his associates' degree from Vermont Junior College in Montpelier in 1952. Don then attended St. Michael's College in Winooski before enlisting in the Army in 1954. After his discharge in 1955 he returned to Montpelier and joined his father and siblings in the family businesses. Don was the treasurer and chief financial officer of Cody Chevrolet, Mid-Town Chrysler-Plymouth and Cody Enterprises. On January 31, 1959, Don married Yolande H. Cote. They were married for over 56 years and made their home at 485 Elm Street in Montpelier for most of those years. He was the proud and loving father of six children, who have known his unconditional love and strong sense of family all their lives. In 1982 Don & his wife, Yolande, retained ownership of two of the family businesses from Cody Enterprises-the Moonlight & Twin City Drive-in Movie Theaters and proudly operated them with the help of their children until they both retired in 1988. Upon retirement Don and Yolande split their time between the green mountains of Vermont and sunny Florida. The two spent their winters as snow birds in Pompano Beach, Florida in the condominium they owned since 1967. They enjoyed the warm winters with their many JBE friends and Florida-based family members. Don was an active member of Montpelier Elks for over 58 years. He was also an avid sports enthusiast. He enjoyed softball, bowling, tennis and most of all golf. One of his most memorable achievements was sinking a hole in one at the Barre Country Club. When not playing sports he loved watching a variety of sports on television. He was a loyal lifelong Yankees and Giants fan. As fate would have it, the night before he passed, the last TV game he watched was the Yankees beating the Red Sox 8-5. Besides his loving wife, he leaves Donna Daniels and her husband James of Berlin, Donald II and his wife Michelle of Palm City, Florida, Kevin of Williston, Dr. Rayden and his wife Tammi of Atlanta, Georgia, Stephen and his wife Beth of Barre and David and his wife Lisa of Boca Raton, Florida. He is also the doting grandfather (Doo) to 11 grandchildren: Christine, Abigail Daniels, Harrison, Kyle, Logan, Alexandra, Dalton, Spencer, Angelina, Donald III & Kennedy. During Don's whole life he followed many of his children's and grandchildren's sporting events, concerts and school functions with pride. Donald also leaves his brothers: Rayden and his wife Ann of Ocean Ridge, Florida, Conrad and his wife Bettie of Jensen Beach, Florida and his sister Mary and her husband Fred Bashara of Montpelier as well as several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He has been predeceased by his parents, his brother Robert Cody, his sister-in-law Janice Cody and his aunt Nellie (Cody) Ziter and her husband Joseph. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday May 16th at St. Augustine's Church in Montpelier at 10 a.m. Interment will be in the Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier, Vermont following the Mass. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to St. Augustine's Church, 16 Barre Street, Montpelier, Vermont 05602 or the Catholic Hospice Unit, Holy Cross Hospital, 4725 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33308 On-line condolence may be sent to www.guareandsons.com
