Cynthia MacDonald, of Montpelier VT, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on June 19, 2018. She was born Joan Cynthia Stafford on April 13, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Dwight and Pauline (Parlin) Stafford and soon moved to Montpelier where she would live most of her life. As a child she liked to roller skate, sing, and dance. She would also visit her grandparents in Vermonts Northeast Kingdom where she would swim, boat, and fish. Cynthia graduated from Montpelier High School in 1950 and the University of Vermont, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi, in 1954. Cynthia married the love of her life Wallace "Mac" MacDonald on August 13, 1954. Shortly thereafter, the couple moved to Kingston, Rhode Island and then to Nyack, New York before moving back to Montpelier in 1970. Along the way, they started a family and made lifelong friendships.
Cynthia held various professional positions throughout her life, most notably as the administrative assistant to the Dean of Students at Vermont College for 22 years. Remaining close to her and Macs family roots, they spent time in the summer months in Island Pond, VT at his familys farm for most of their married life. In retirement, Cynthia and Mac traveled extensively in Europe and North America.
In addition to being a loving wife and mother, where ever she lived, Cynthia was a very active volunteer for the churches she attended. Later in her life, she volunteered at Central Vermont Medical Center and the Vermont State House. Throughout her life Cynthia cultivated and maintained many friendships both locally and around the country.
In addition to her husband of more than 63 years, Cynthia is survived by her son Bruce, his wife Karen and her grandson Asa of Warren, VT. She was predeceased by a son, Douglas Moore MacDonald.
A memorial service, in keeping with her faith, will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday June 23, 2018 at Christ Episcopal Church at 64 State St., Montpelier VT.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made in Cynthias name to Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice or the Central Vermont Humane Society.
