Concha Juliana (Cano) Buzzi, 93, of Montpelier, died peacefully at Woodridge Nursing Home on August 3, 2015. She was born on June 28, 1922 in Websterville, Vermont, the sixth of seven children born to parents Jacinto and Nieves (Aja) Cano, who had recently emigrated from Santander, Spain.
While growing up, she lived on lower Berlin Street in Montpelier which became a small Spanish enclave for farming. She attended Saint Michael's Graded School and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1941. As a high school student, she worked at McLellan's Five and Dime Store in Montpelier. Upon high school graduation, she began employment at National Life Insurance Company, where over the next several decades she held positions in the Mortgage Loan Department, Policy Holder Services, and for numerous years of her career, she held the position as one of the first corporate receptionists. She especially loved her work as the welcoming face of National Life, and had such privileges as meeting Vice President George HW Bush and Major League Baseball player Tug McGraw, and dignitaries from all over the world. During World War II, she sold U.S. War Bonds and was voted Miss USA War Bonds representing National Life, as well as Miss Maple Sugar. She retired in 1986.
Concha married Dario Buzzi in 1947, and raised three sons on George Street in Barre. In 1960 they moved to Pearl Street in Montpelier, where she resided until February 2015 and thereafter at Woodridge Nursing Home. She was a devoted and loving mother, and her immediate and extended family meant the world to her. Her passions included dancing, animals, bowling, knitting, dress making, classic movies, mystery novels and crossword puzzles. She was an active member of St Augustine's Parish, Catholic Daughters of America, and volunteered her time at the Benefit Shop and Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Concha was predeceased by her husband Dario in 2012 after nearly 65 years of marriage, as well as her siblings Pedro, Louis, Stephen, Jesus, Vicenta, and Maria. She is survived by her three sons and their families, Carlo and his wife Judy of Danvers, Massachusetts, David and his wife Rosa of Plainfield, and Daniel of Montpelier; as well as four grandchildren Alex, Christopher, Gabriella, and Nicolas Buzzi.
