Berlin – Clare Swanson Greene's spirit peacefully took flight in the presence of family at Woodridge Nursing and Rehab before dawn on August 1, 2022. Born in Concord, MA on July 6, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Oscar Anton
Swanson and Mary Hannah Waterhouse. She wrote her class Alma Mater at Arlington High School, MA; studied piano for seven years at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge; and graduated from Simmons College, Boston MA with a degree in business and a minor in guidance and personnel management. She studied at The University of Maryland to
become certified as a high school economics and business law teacher, and became chairwoman of the Business Dept. at Oxon Hill High School in MD.
After her husband Charlie's untimely death 30 years ago, she moved to Haverhill, MA and then Salem, NH in order to be near her dear friends in MA and family in VT. She moved to Montpelier to join her daughter and grandchildren in 2016.
Clare loved our family fiercely and always made it her top priority. Her greatest joy was being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother; in these roles she excelled. We will be forever grateful for her kind heart, cheerful nature, inner strength, resilience, self-sacrifice and unconditional love. Clare gave us the freedom and opportunities to chase our dreams. Among the many adventures she experienced along with her grandchildren were attending Red Sox and Celtics games with her grandson Dave, including a tour of the Fenway Park locker room/dugout and attending Michael Jordan's last game against the Celtics in Boston. She brought her Granddaughter Christina to musical theatre performances, including "Hair," where she was shocked and stunned when the actors were completely nude in front of her 13-year
Granddaughter. She took her Granddaughter Erin on a whale watch and was present when Erin first met her future husband while playing miniature golf on the Cape. Throughout her life, Clare attended a multitude of her family's and students' high school performances and athletic events. She often stayed for weeks at a time in Vermont in order to
care for and support her family.
Clare is remembered by many close and loyal friends. She loved to invite friends and family over for gatherings and meals, enjoying the preparation and attention to details that she felt were necessary for those get-togethers. She
volunteered in many capacities at the Church of the Holy Communion, Washington DC and Christ Episcopal Church in Clinton, MD, where her daughter met and married The Reverend David M. Hall. Clare was on the Board of Trustees,
Social and Bereavement Committees of her condo association in Salem, NH. In her golden years she traveled extensively, getting stamps on her passport from countries including Russia, Italy, England, the Greek Islands and the Caribbean. Her recipes for carrot cake, pumpkin bread and Christmas sugar cookies will be passed down from generation to generation.
Clare is survived by her daughter Diana L. Greene of Montpelier and partner Kelly; three grandchildren: Erin Tierney of Sandwich, MA and husband John; Christina Hall of Middlesex, VT and fiancé Alex; David Hall II of Montpelier and girlfriend Caitlin; as well as her four great grandchildren: Parker, Emma, Elizabeth Clare and Brynn Diana of Sandwich,
MA. She is also survived by her sister Diane Haley of Dennis, MA and sister by heart Ginny Heislein of Andover, MA.
Along with her parents, Clare was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband Charlie Greene. She will enter eternal rest beside him in W. Goshen, CT in early October. We are inspired by how courageous she was in the years following Charlie's death and in her final months of life. Clare made the world a better place and will be forever missed
by every life she touched. Since her passing, we have gathered strength in A.A. Milne's expression (paraphrased), "How blessed we are to have someone that makes saying goodbye so hard."
Arrangements are in the care of the Guare Funeral Home, 30 School St in Montpelier, VT. Our family would like to extend its thanks to Taylor, Karen, Joanne, Marci, and Beverly at Woodridge Nursing and Rehab for their compassionate and skillful care of Clare, in addition to all the nursing and office staff there. We extend our gratitude to the staff and volunteers at the Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice for their invaluable support and for being sources of strength for our loved one and family. At her request, there will be no service or calling hours. Online condolences may be left at www.guareandsons.com. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you honor Clare's life by telling someone how much
they mean to you and your reason(s) for feeling that way.
