Charles Henry Mayone, Jr., passed peacefully with his family present on October 3, 2026, after a battle with lymphoma. He was 96 yrs old.
Charlie was born in 1930 to Charles H Mayone, Sr and Rosemary DeCiccio in Mamaroneck, New York. He grew up in Larchmont, New York and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brother as well as being a passionate car enthusiast. After graduating from Fairfield University in 1952 he joined the Navy during the latter part of the Korean war and served as a radio operator on the USS Macon in 1953. Upon his return and honorable discharge, he married his sweetheart Jennie Caroline Celestino in August of 1954. She fell for him and his red MG. They honeymooned in Nova Scotia. The two settled in Westchester County in New York and began a family. Charlie was an entrepreneur at heart and his love of cars transformed into a decade-long career in the auto industry, helping to introduce the VW Beetle to Americans in 1961. Charlie enjoyed buying and refurbishing antique cars. He was an avid tennis player and in 1971 he and his brother invested in and built an indoor tennis facility in Greenwich, Connecticut. It was a fairly new concept at the time. The club was eventually purchased by 7-time grand slam winner Ivan Lendl who still owns it today. In the mid-70’s Charlie and Jen opened a retail gift shop in southern Connecticut and were very successful for many years.
Charlie was an avid bicyclist and enjoyed riding with his club along the Florida coast. He spent many days tinkering with and building new bikes for a retail bike store. He enjoyed classical music and played the piano. He introduced his kids to music and fine art. He enjoyed gardening, birdwatching, photography, and playing chess. While numerous physical ailments eventually curtailed his biking and tennis habits, he never stopped making new friends. When his wife passed in 2022 Charlie moved to Vermont to be close to some of his family. He quickly made friends and fell in love with the community. Even as his vision began to fail he deeply appreciated the natural beauty of his Vermont surroundings. And he was always happy to be near his family. Charlie’s energetic spirit and warm, loving nature will remain with us forever.
Charlie is survived by his children, son, Christopher Mayone and spouse, Kaiya Korb, daughter, Kathleen Mann, and son, Michael Mayone and spouse Catherine; and his beloved grandchildren, Emily, Lindsay, and Kelsey Mann, and Jasper and Stella Mayone.
The Mayone family wishes to extend a deeply heartfelt thank you to the medical staff at Central Vermont Medical Center for their extraordinary care and empathy during a difficult time. They also express profound gratitude to the staff at Westview Meadows in Montpelier, where Charlie lived during his four years in Vermont. His care was exceptional, and he formed true connections with so many there. Finally, the family extends a special salute to the doctors, nurses, and support staff at the VA Medical Center in White River Junction, who embraced Charlie and made him feel genuinely at home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Charlie’s honor at St. Augustine’s Church in Montpelier on Saturday, November 7th at 11 a.m. Charlie’s ashes will be interred alongside his beloved wife in the South Fayston Cemetery.
