Burlington and South Hero, VT
Catherine F. Young died peacefully on February 3, 2011 at the Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington, Vermont. She had just celebrated her 90th birthday. Kind, gentle and always loving, her family will miss her.
Catherine was born on January 31, 1921 in West Orange, New Jersey, the fourth of the six children of Edward and Mary Ann (Mulhall) Malloy. She graduated from Orange High School with honors. During World War II she worked for Westinghouse making aircraft landing lights.
She married Leonard R. Young of Plainfield, New Jersey on January 12, 1946 after his return from the Pacific theater, where he served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. They made their home in North Plainfield, New Jersey, and raised three daughters there: Maurita Kling of Wiscasset, Maine, Claudia Young Palmer of Ticonderoga, New York, and Pamela Cummings Rice of South Hero, Vermont.
After her husband's retirement they lived in New Bern, North Carolina for ten years and then moved to Kennebunk, Maine, where they resided until Leonard's death on July 2, 2009. She moved to Vermont recently to be close to her family.
In addition to her three daughters, Catherine is survived by her younger sister, Gertrude Zimmer, of Rochester, New York; five grandchildren, Rory and Darcy Cummings, and Hannah, Bonnie and Emily Palmer; and one great-granddaughter, Guinivere Cummings.
