Obituary

Catherine Segale Couture "Beautiful", 77 died gracefully at her home of 47 years surrounded by family on Sunday April 12, 2009. Cathy was born October 3, 1931 in Rutland, Vermont. She was the daughter of Leo and Helene Sullivan and graduated from Mount Saint Joseph Academy, in Rutland Vermont in 1949. After high school she worked as a telephone operator and also taught tap dancing. On October 9, 1954 she married Armand Segale in Rutland. They resided there until they moved to New Orleans while Armand was in the service. After two years in New Orleans they returned to Rutland briefly before settling in Montpelier. Cathy gave birth to six children and lived the rest of her life in the Meadow neighborhood of Montpelier, where she was a self proclaimed "Meadow Queen" along with her friends Betty Blouin and Mary Kerin. She dedicated these years to raising her six children and enjoying everyone in the neighborhood. She taught religious education and tap dancing to many people in Central Vermont. In 1980 Armand and Catherine opened The Linen Shoppe in Montpelier. Armand died on February 9, 1985 at the age of 53. She continued to operate The Linen Shoppe until 1995. On June 10, 1989 Cathy married Raymond Couture of Montpelier, who also had six children with his first wife. Cathy and Ray spent their 17 years together enjoying their combination of children, stepchildren and grandchildren until Raymond's death on November 6, 2006. Survivors include her son Anthony Segale and his wife Debbie; her children Amanda and Cheryl Ferguson, his children Jennifer and Eric and their mother Kimberly all of Atlanta Georgia; her son Michael Segale and his wife Norma, their children Nathan and Morgan of Montpelier; her daughter Ann Pelkey and her husband John and their children Jonathan and Amanda of Montpelier; her son Joseph Segale and his wife Jeannette of Huntington, her son Thomas Segale and his wife Jane and their children Nicole and Will of Natick, MA; her daughter Teresa Kajenski and husband Ken and their child Katrina of Williston; Six step children, Deborah Couture Brush, Barbara Couture Lens both of Windsor, Theresa Couture Schneiderheinze of Bedford NH; Richard Couture of Ithaca NY, Thomas Couture of Lubbock TX, Leonard Couture of Greenland NH plus sixteen step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Edward Sullivan of Fruitland Park, FL; sisters-in-law Mary Sullivan and Claire Sullivan of Rutland. She was predeceased by her brothers Richard Sullivan and John Sullivan both of Rutland. Cathy enjoyed spending time with family and friends, reading, gardening, cooking, supporting The Boston Red Sox and cheering on her grandchildren in all their sports. She had a passion for helping others and was able to see the beauty in everyone. Calling hours will be Thursday, April 16 from 4-7 pm at Guare and Sons Funeral Home on 30 School Street, Montpelier, VT. Her life will be celebrated at a mass on Friday, April 17 at 10 am at St. Augustine's Church in Montpelier. A reception will follow the funeral at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Barre, VT.
