Obituary

Barre, VT Bernard X. Chenette, Sr. (1925 2018) Bernard X. Chenette, Sr., 92, died on April 6 at Woodridge Rehabilitation and Nursing, surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 7, 1925 in Montpelier, he was the son of Francis and Eva (McKenna) Chenette. Bernie married the love of his life, Barbara Dindo, on April 17, 1948. This month they would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. He attended local schools, graduating from St. Michaels High School in 1942. He was awarded a college scholarship, but would instead follow his dream to eventually have his own automotive business. In 1943, he wanted to serve his country and joined the United States Army Airforce where he trained as a gunner on the B24 bomber. As the youngest son in the family, he was called back from service to work on the family farm in Berlin. He was honorably discharged as a Private First Class 5 in 1947, and his first stop was Barbaras house, arriving at her doorstop in uniform. After working for several years as a service manager for the Cadillac Oldsmobile dealership in Barre, his gift as an automotive technician turned into a specialty in automatic transmission repair. For 40 years, he owned and operated his own business, Twin City Transmissions, on North Main Street in Barre. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and four sons: Bernard, Jr. (Danalda), Michael (Linda), Bradley (Lynda) and David (Kathy). As the patriarch of the family, Dad was looked to for guidance and was always there to provide his love and support. He was also Papa to twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren who will miss him dearly, and leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and seven brothers and sisters: Gladys, Agnes, Erva, Louise, Joseph, James and William. He was a faithful member of St. Monicas Church in Barre, as well as the St. Augustines Adoration Chapel. He was also a third degree knight at the Knights of Columbus, a 47-year member of the Barre Elks Club, and the Canadian Club for 34 years. He also served on the Barre Town Planning Board for several years and assisted with the St. Monica CCD religious education program. In his later years, he took great pleasure in watching his beloved Boston Red Sox. The family would like to extend its deepest appreciation to Dr. Robert Robinson, as well as the nurses and staff at both Woodridge and Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice. Calling hours will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10 at Guare and Sons Funeral Home in Montpelier, with a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, April 11 at 11 a.m. at St. Augustines Church. Internment will be at St. Augustines Cemetery at a later date. Contributions may be made to Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT, 05641, or St. Monicas Church, 79 Summer Street, Barre, VT, 05641.
