Barbara G. Hoyt, 89, of Berlin Street, Montpelier died Friday, February 21, 2014 at her home in Montpelier.
She was born in Ludlow, Vermont, on December 12, 1924, the daughter of Albert & Carmen (Snell) Gilman.
When growing up on her Grandmother's farm in Ludlow, Barbara attended Black River Academy in Ludlow. Later she graduated from the Jeanne Mance School of Nursing in Burlington and decided much later in life to achieve her goal of obtaining her college degree by earning her Bachelor of Arts degree from Goddard College.
Barb, as her friends knew her, worked at a job she really enjoyed, with the Vermont Department of Social Welfare. As a social worker, she was always a strong advocate for families in need including many evenings finding assistance to those without food or fuel.
She married Lloyd I. Hoyt in Burlington, VT on August 11, 1944. They have two children, Doug & Mike and lived in Montpelier for many years. Mr. Hoyt predeceased her on October 15, 1977.
Barbara was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters. Until her health restricted her mobility, she could be found most any mass at Saint Augustine sitting in "her" seat at the rear of the church. Barb greatly enjoyed her time participating in the prayer circle and other telephone related activities staying in touch with others.
She is survived by two sons, Douglas S. Hoyt and his wife, Charlotte of Montpelier and Michael Hoyt and his wife, Judy of Spring Hills, Florida; three grandchildren, Julieann Barney and her husband, Brian of Peacham; Derrick Hoyt and his wife, Holly of East Barre; and Joseph Hoyt of Montpelier: four great grandchildren, twins- Katherine and Colin Barney; Brady Hoyt and Ethan Hoyt.
The family would like to extend its appreciation to TLC Nursing for its services that helped to fulfill Barbara's wish to remain at home during the past months.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday February 26, 2014 at St. Augustine Catholic Church. A memorial reception will follow the Mass in the parish hall.
Burial will be held later at Pleasant View Cemetery, Ludlow, VT.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Augustine Catholic Church, 16 Barre Street, Montpelier, VT 05602.
