Newport News, VA/ Montpelier, VT
Angie C. Pratt, 94, formerly of Main Street in Montpelier, slipped quietly away late Friday afternoon, October 26, 2007 at the Riverside Convalescent Center in Newport News, Virginia.
Angie was born in Barre, VT on February 21, 1913, the daughter of Antonio and Estella (Rosati) Conti and she received her education in Burlington. As the oldest of four children, Angie was required to assume the responsibility of running the household as a teenager, following the early death of her mother. This became the first step in a lifetime of unselfishly helping and caring for others.
Angie married Robert W. Pratt in St. Augustines Church in Montpelier, VT on August 17, 1946. Together, they raised their family, including extended family members, in an active household on Main Street in Montpelier. Bob predeceased her on September 4, 1980. The years of family life on Main Street were special, as Angie welcomed one and all to her home. She enjoyed tending her flowerbeds in the summer, and was a fabulous cook; one did not want to miss Sunday dinner.
Angie worked for many years with the former Barre Times, and later with the Times-Argus as a distribution supervisor. Her memberships included St. Augustines Church, the Montpelier Women's Club, honorary member of the V.F.W. #792 Aux., and an active member for R.S.V.P. She also had a special enjoyment for volunteer work at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier.
She later lived on Freedom Drive for several years, and for a time called Heaton Woods her home. In her later "single" years, Angie finally learned to drive a car at the age of 70, and developed a close bond with her sister-in-law, Freda Murphy, who, along with the rest of "the girls" enjoyed a number of fun-filled summer excursions to Maine.
When dementia began to rob her of her independent living skills, Angie made her final move to Newport News, where she lived for eight years near the home of her daughter, Cindy Millard. Cindy's loving heart and watchful eye assured that Angie received the best of care from the kind people of Riverside.
Angie took great pride in her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is survived by two sons: Robert P. Pratt and wife Jeanette of Katy, Texas, and their children, Robert H. and Melissa; Richard A. Pratt and wife Anne of Jericho, and their children, Abbey and Anthony; a daughter: Cindy Millard and husband Robert of Newport News, VA, and their daughter, Michelle, and many nieces and nephews. Angie was predeceased by two brothers: Philip Conti of Marco Island, FL, and Reno Conti of Bradenton, FL; a sister: Eleanor Helin of Bradenton, FL; and a grandson: Christopher Pratt.
Her funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Augustines Church on November 9, 2007 at 11:00 AM.
Calling hours are November 8, 2007 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Guare & Sons Funeral Home.
Burial will be held in the North Branch Cemetery, Middlesex, VT.
Memorial contributions may be made to: Alzheimer's Association, Vermont Chapter, 172 N. Main St., Barre, VT 05641, the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, 135 Main Street, Montpelier, VT 05602, or a charity of one's choice.
