Almo A. Cecchini, 94, of Heaton Woods and formerly of Mountainview Street, Montpelier died at his home on Thursday, November 27, 2008. Almo was a lifelong resident of Montpelier and was born on May 12, 1914 the son of Angelo L. & Orsolina (Frontini) Cecchini.
He received his education in Montpelier Grade School and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1934. While in High School he was an outstanding athlete as he received letters in football, basketball, tennis & golf and later a devoted fisherman. He later attended Montpelier Seminary. Almo also attended many courses from the Barre Evening Drawing School that was taught by Carlo Abate, Charles pamPearl, Conard Sellburg & Emilio Politi.
Almo married the former Laura Hebert in St. Augustine Catholic Church on January 31, 1942. Mrs. Cecchini died May 26, 1999.
He served in the US Army during WW 2, from October 26, 1942 through November 12, 1945. Almo served in the American Theater, Eastern Atlantic & Mediterranean Theater and earned several bronze stars, his unit received a Presidential Citation for infantry combat in the "Battle of the Bulge" from January 22, to Feb. 6, 1945 in Germany.
His memberships include Justice of the Peace, Board of Civil Authority, Board of Abatement, Green Mount Cemetery Commissioner, Montpelier and Washington County Republican Committees, Montpelier City Club, Montpelier Country Club, Montpelier Lodge of Elks # 924 and was "Elk of the Year" in 1984 " In Appreciation of his many years of service to his nation, community and his lodge". He was also a member of Montpelier Aurora Lodge # 22 F & AM, Mount Siani Temple, VFW #792, American Post # 3, and Mutuo Club and past Director. An active director on the Italian-American Memorial committee for the stone cutter statue located in Dente Park. He also worked on committee for the granite base for the American flag and helped get the pictures from Italy for the front hallway.
Almo also received a 20 year recognition award from SCORE- Service Corps of Retired Executives Association for dedicated and voluntary service to small business community. He was a Director of Central Vermont Economic Development Corporation and the Washington County Railroad.
Almo started working with his father at a very early age at Everlasting Memorial Works and learned tool sharpening, washing and boxing, stone cutting and sandblasting. He took control from his father and operated the company with his wife, Laura and was President and General Manager for 35 years, retiring on December 31, 1978 when they closed the business.
Almo is survived by his son, Terry Cecchini and his wife, Eveleen of Shelburne, VT; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Edro Cecchini.
A Grave side service will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, December 1st, at Green Mount Cemetery. A Memorial Mass will be offered at 11:00 am, Monday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. A luncheon will follow the Mass in the parish hall.
