Obituary

Barre, VT Albert E. Saari, 91, of Cedar Drive, died Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at the Woodridge Nursing Home where he had been a resident since August of 2008. He was born on September 19, 1918 in Woodbury, the son of Emil and Edla (Westerinen) Saari. He attended graded school in Woodbury and graduated from the St. Johnsbury trade school in 1942 where he learned welding. On October 23, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in World War II until his honorable discharge on January 6, 1946. On February 2, 1944 he married the former June Coburn of Hardwick. He studied automotive repair in Bristol, CT, where he and his wife lived for several years. He repaired Packard cars and when they moved to Vermont, he was one of a few who could repair them at that time. He worked most of his career in the Granite Industry including working in the Rock of Ages Quarries. He also worked many years as head of maintenance for the Cook, Watkin, and Patch granite company. He was an active member of St. Monica Catholic Church. He was also a member of the VFW Post # 792 in Montpelier and the Steel Worker's Union. He enjoyed time with his family, hunting, fishing and his many retirement years. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, June Saari; two daughters, Marsha and her husband Mark of Montpelier and Barbara Scafidi of Waltham, MA; grandchildren and great grandchildren include, Martin Scafidi and his wife Julie and their children, Nicholas and Anthony, Catherine King and her husband, Michael and their son, Lucas; Christopher Lang and his wife Josie, and their children, Zoe and Benjamine; Elizabeth Lang and her companion, Steven Cliche. He was predeceased by a grandson; Daniel Scafidi; a brother, Arne Saari and a sister, Anja Saari. A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Mr. Saari's family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the Woodridge Staff for their outstanding compassionate care.
