Albert "Al" Jerome, 94, of Center Road in East Montpelier died on Sunday, April 21, 2019 at the Central Vermont Medical Center surrounded by the love of his wife and children.
He was born on March 23, 1925 in Burlington, VT, the son of Raymond Jerome and Ruth Denis. From the age of 9 Al was raised by Jack and Maggie Clossey and grew up on the Clossey Farm. He attended public schools in East Montpelier.
In 1943, Albert enlisted in United States Navy, during WWII where he served on several ships and in many campaigns, most proudly serving on the USS Kidd. Albert had the pleasure of revisiting the USS Kidd, which is now on display in New Orleans. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
After returning home from the Navy, Albert married Elizabeth "Betty" Wills in 1946 at St. Augustines Church. Together they turned a house into a home, and raised nine children with love.
Albert worked as a granite cutter, first for Rock of Ages and later for Montpelier Granite Works. He retired in 1992 and enjoyed volunteering at CVH and the Red Cross with his wife. He loved being outdoors, gardening, hiking, hunting and teaching his children about the stars on warm summer nights. You could very often see Albert and Betty walking in East Montpelier or sitting outside their beautiful home where all were welcome.
Albert was a Lifetime member of the VFW post 792 as well as the American Legion. He was a faithful member of the St. Augustine Parish and a member of the Granite Cutters Union.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years Elizabeth "Betty" and their children Linda Kennedy of Northfield, VT; David Jerome and his wife Linda of Hawaii; Stephen Jerome and his wife Lois of Northfield; VT, Teresa Paine and her husband Chip of Barre, VT; Susan Charron of Marshfield, VT; Joseph Jerome and his wife Lorna of St. Albans, VT; Katie Charron and her husband Bill of Northfield, NH; Paul Jerome and his wife Sherry of Middlesex, VT; 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his son Bernard James, grandson Michael Paine, son in law, Bradley Charron, Jack and Maggie Clossey, his birth parents and siblings.
A funeral mass will be held 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 29th at St. Augustine Church, 16 Barre Street, Montpelier, VT 05602
